Rukmini Devi Arundale was an Indian theosophist, dancer and choreographer of the Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam, and an activist for animal welfare. She was the first woman in Indian history to be nominated a member of the Rajya Sabha.
She does not have a Ordinary People Change the World book to her name, but she appeared in an episode of Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum called I Am Rukmini Devi.
She is voiced by Delia Chambers.
She is visited in 1911 and then 24 years later in 1935, so she would be appriximately 7 then 31 in her appearances.
Appearance[]
- Rukmini Devi is depicted with light brown skin and black hair that is tied in a bun that’s held by a white scrunchie. She also has a bindi on her forehead and between her eyebrows. She wears two gold jhumka earrings, two bangle bracelets on each arm, a pink bharatanatyam dress with gold and magenta accents, light pink leggings and greyish-purple flats. She wears ghungroo bells whenever she’s practicing bharatanatyam.
Etymology[]
Rukmini's full name was Rukmini Devi Neelakanta Shastri until 1920 when she married George Arundale, becoming Rukmini Devi Arundale. Since she is referred to only by her forenames ("Rukmini Devi") this avoids a problem seen in other episodes with famous women who acquired their notable surnames by marriage, and characters wrongly referring to them by that surname despite meeting them before marriage.
Trivia[]
- Rukmini Devi met Anna Pavlova during her travels. The show never made a reference to that.
